For over a decade, Horizon has proudly supported Omexom with the delivery of electricity easements across Auckland . Our most recent project took us to the spectacular Kawau Island, where our team completed an easement survey in support of new power infrastructure.
But what is an easement, and why does it matter?
An easement is a legal right to use a portion of land owned by someone else for a specific purpose, in this case, to support the installation and ongoing access to a new power pole. These rights are formally recorded on the property’s title to ensure clarity and certainty for both the landowner and utility provider.
Our role involves precisely locating the asset and preparing a certified easement survey plan that aligns with Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) requirements. These plans are critical to ensuring legal access for maintenance and long-term reliability of essential services like electricity.
Easement work requires collaboration, technical expertise, and a deep understanding of land development and property law, all of which we bring to every job, whether it’s on the mainland or an island paradise like Kawau.
Check out our video below and join our Survey Manager Richard, Survey Technician Gene, and our newest team member Oscar a 4th-year surveying student from the Otago University, as they head to Kawau Island to carry out an electricity easement survey. The winter sunshine turned on for a great day out in the field, with some well earned downtime and a bit of fishing to finish things off. We’re proud to support the next generation of surveyors while continuing to deliver high-quality work for our clients.
Ngā mihi to our client Omexom for their continued trust in Horizon.
