In this months project focus, Architectural Design Manager Frank Stanton discusses his recent project Shoal Sanctuary. Located within the Shoal Beach coastal community thatās long golden sand beach is flanked by the Southern Hawkes Bayās rugged striking coastal landscape.
Throughout a dedicated and well considered design process, Frank was able to ensure a high-quality bespoke home resulted for our client, Scott & Nichole Gibb, thatās associated construction is now well underway. Key design principles & outcomes revolved around procuring an exceptional living environment beach side retreat to allow Scott & Nichole to enjoy quality time with both their extended family & friends within this
āScott and Nichole have been amazing clients to work with allowing us to really explore just what could really occur within the confines of their perfectly situated property that enjoys stunning uninterrupted vistas of the neighbouring landscape. With a smallish site and restrictive building controls and need to provide a stylish spacious dwelling that still portrayed an aesthetically minimalistic accent so as to keep in balance with the surrounding environment, provided a great challenge that all bespoke home specialist designers enjoy.ā

The clients desired built form and associated indoor and outdoor spaces were therefore carefully designed to mitigate yet embrace both the regions summertime warm strong valley winds and cooling Pacific Ocean sea breeze. Throughout winters chilling southerly blasts, the considered layout offers inviting cozy spaces fireside reading or lounging out while watching the big game within the media / bar room.
The dwelling building itself consists of three interconnected pavilion structures with the dwellings internal visual form expressing the character of a beach side āHamptonā theme house along with portraying industrial visual forms through the use of internally exposed steel portal frames. Large format glazing focuses viewing lines from principle internal living spaces northwards out over the adjacent open reserve area landscape and beyond to the beauty of the āRazor Backā coastal hillside rangers.
Outside, the adjoining gable pitch roof structures are designed to reflect the interlinked peaks of the surrounding coastal ranges with further exposed steel framing forming visual links to the surrounding historical farming buildings. All visually exposed external materials have been specifically selected to echo the patterns and colour tone accents of the surround landscape, we will discuss this in more detail in one of our future upcoming newsletters.
āWe are extremely proud of the design that transpired for this project and appreciatively thank Scott and Nichole for their time and contribution towards the overall design process. The projects builderās carpenters Wakelin Contracting Services LtdĀ are doing an excellent job of executing this exciting bespoke build and we look forward to seeing their fine craftmanship bring everything together.ā
